Our Goals
Our preschool program is designed to help each child achieve early learning success. We focus on developing social skills and language skills, as well as building phonemic awareness and numeracy skills. Our engaging, play-based activities, nurture children’s natural love of learning, building their self-confidence, and giving them a strong start for kindergarten and beyond.
Our Program
We begin each of our programs with free play time. As students come in to start their day, they choose how and with what to play. During this time children are offered a variety of themed learning activities that target early learning skills. We also offer opportunities for role play, block play, puzzles, puppets, books, paint, play dough. and more!
After free play the whole class gathers for a large group lesson. The group lesson includes learning about the weekly theme, a story, songs and movement activities. Large group time finishes with a snack and juice break. Throughout the year each child takes a turn bringing juice for their classmates to share and collecting each other’s cups.
The final portion of our day splits our class into two smaller groups. One group completes a craft/table activity and then finishes up with small group play time in the craft room. The other group participates in our Show and Tell program as well as games and activities focused on gross motor development. Once both groups have finished their initial activity, the small groups switch so that all students have a turn at each station before heading home for the day.

Anita is excited to be back doing what she loves most- engaging with children in a hands-on preschool setting.
Our Classrooms
We have two bright, beautiful and spacious rooms! We share space in other rooms in the facility where we incorporate lots of gross motor movement, through games, dance and play. We hold yearly concerts in our four year old programs including a Graduation ceremony for families, relatives and friends to enjoy!
Our History
Gingerbread Nursery School was started by Lois Waas in the early 1980s and was originally located at Montague Street and Argyle Road. In the early 1990s, Gingerbread moved to its current Queen Street location and shared space with what was then Macleod School. The ‘90s saw the closing of Macleod School and the opening of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church as well as Gingerbread’s second owner, Sally Skinner. In 2004 the preschool was purchased by Melanie Buchanan who carried on its legacy for almost twenty years. 2023 marked another page in Gingerbread’s history as the preschool passed on to the current owner, Maria Zasada. Having had her own children attend Gingerbread, Maria is thrilled to have the opportunity to carry on with a much-loved program that has touched the lives of so many Regina families!
